The "Fortress of Juviles" (El Fuerte) was built in the VIII century, although perhaps has got a former origin. This fortress was very important in the Middle Ages because of its crucial situation.  It was conquered by Abd-el-Rahmán III in 913 to crush the rebellion of Omar Ben Hafsun. During the rebellion of the moriscos in 1500, Fernando the Catholic conquered it to prevent future problems.  In 1572 it was repopulated with Christians from Castille.

The Fortress. Ruins of the Mozarab fortress built in the VIII century.

Emigration.-  Juviles succeded to have 500 inhabitants. In the sixties there was a big migratory movement: Granada, Germany, Almería  and over all Barcelona and Pamplona. These were  the places where the people of Juviles went away, leaving the village almost empty.  Many houses were left. Nevertheless, this process has changed and a lot of houses are being rebuilt because many families from Juviles are coming back to recover their roots.
